À l'occasion du colloque de l'Association des professeurs des littérature acadienne et québecoise de l'Atlantque, qui se déroulera sur le campus de l'Université Mount Allison, la Owens Art Gallery présente une exposition qui rassemble les oeuvres de huit artistes acadiens choisis par Jennifer Bélanger et Mario Doucette.
Les deux commissaires invités, eux-mêmes artistes et Acadiens, ont monté une exposition qui reflète leur intérêt pour l'art en tant qu'activité inextricablement liée aux concepts d'identité et d'expression personnelle. Les artistes Maryse Arsenault, Jean-Denis Boudreau, Herménégilde Chiasson, François Gaudet, André Lapointe, Mathieu Léger, André Alan Phelps et Stefan St-Laurent représentent plusieurs générations et un éventail de carrières variées, des plus émergentes au plus établies. Réunies, leurs oeuvres mettent de l'avant une variété d'approches et de techniques, témoignant ainsi la richesse et de la diversité de l'art contemporain en Acadie.
Une cérémonie d'ouverture aura lieu le samedi 25 octobre, à 17h. Entrée lible.

The Owens Art Gallery presents an exhibition of the work of eight Acadian artists selected by Jennifer Bélanger and Mario Doucette. The guest curators, artists and Acadians themselves, have presented us with an exhibition, which reflects their interest in the making of art as an activity inextricably bound up with concepts of identity and the drive for self-expression. The artists they have chosen represent several generations and a wide career range, from emerging to more senior and established. The works in the exhibition offer a variety of approaches and media, suggesting the richness and diversity in the art of contemporary Acadie. The artists in the exhibition are Maryse Arsenault, Jean-Denis Boudreau, Herménégilde Chiasson, Francois Gaudet, André Lapointe, Mathieu Léger, André Alan Phelps, Stefan St-Laurent.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 25 at 5:00pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Sobey Art Award 2008

Equivalent to the Turner Prize, the Sobey Art Award, presented by Scotiabank is Canada’s pre-eminent prize for young Canadian artists. Five artists vie for this award in this intriguing exhibition featuring the best in young Canadian contemporary art. This dynamic showcase of paintings, multimedia and sculpture will culminate with the presentation of the award on October 1st, 2008.
It is awarded every year to an artist 40 years of age or younger who has shown their work in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated. Each of the four runners up for the Award will receive a prize of $5,000. The winner of the award receives $50,000.
Intriguing, thought-provoking and exciting, the breadth of each short-listed artist’s practice is considered by a panel of curatorial advisors, each representing a major gallery in one of five Canadian regions (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and the North, and West Coast).
