Oh, Canada - Glenbow Museum, Calgary AB

Oh, Canada: Contemporary Art from North North America

JANUARY 31 - APRIL 26 2015

Organized by MASS MoCA, Curated by Denise Markonish

This exhibition is vast in scope and size - so big that no one gallery space in Calgary is large enough to host all of it. Glenbow is proud to partner with Esker Foundation, Illongworth Kerr Gallery and Nickle Galleries to bring the epic Oh, Canada: Contemporary Art from North North America to Calgary.

Oh, Canada is the creation of American curator Denise Markonish and is the largest survey of contemporary Canadian art ever produced outside the country. The artists she selected explore ideas that could inhabit the heart of any Canadian. There are works that explore landscape and its powerful hold on the Canadian psyche; dread and bravery in the exploration of the uncanny; Aboriginal identity and the on-going effects of colonialism; traditions of storytelling; the idea of the North; the Canadian cultural mosaic; a return to craft and more.

Glenbow's installation features artists from every corner of the country: Nunavut's Shuvinai Ashoona and Annie Pootogook, British Columbia's Douglas Coupland, Saskatchewan's Wally Dion, Manitoba's Divya Mehra, Ontario's Shary Boyle, Quebec's Patrick Bernatchez, New Brunswick's Mario Doucette and Albertans Terrance Houle and Eric Cameron, to name just a few.

Check out the exhibition website www.ohcanadayyc.com for artist bios and a calendar of events and programs related to the exhibition.
