Le Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul est heureux de présenter Fragments dans le cadre de la Manif d’art 10. S’inspirant de la thématique de la biennale intitulée Les illusions sont réelles, l’exposition confronte nos conceptions des récits historiques en explorant les questions suivantes : par qui et pour qui l’histoire est-elle écrite ? Qui met-elle de l’avant et, par le fait même, qui exclut-elle ?

Ce processus de réflexion est nourri par des pratiques artistiques aux approches et médiums distincts, des Fragments réunis dans le but de multiplier les points de vue. Les œuvres tirées de la collection permanente du musée - dont celles de Michael Love (1976-…), Dominique Valade (1958-…) , Elise Peterson (1988-…), Sylvie Pic (1957-…) et Mario Doucette (1971-…) - interrogent la construction de notre identité et les symboles qui la constitue. Que ce soit par le biais de souvenirs personnels ou collectifs, de faits documentés ou imaginés, les croisements entre les perspectives sont encouragés afin d’explorer des avenues souvent mises en marge.

The Sobey Family and Canadian Art

Generations: The Sobey Family and Canadian Art will tell the story of one family’s visionary engagement with Canadian and Indigenous art, braiding together works by early European newcomers like Cornelius Krieghoff; titans of Canadian 20th century art, the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, David Milne and Emily Carr; a rich display of works by the Quebec Impressionists, as well as Automatiste painters Jean Paul Riopelle and Paul-Émile Borduas; and works by trail-blazing artists of today, including contemporary artists Kent Monkman, Brenda Draney, Brian Jungen, Annie Pootoogook and Mario Doucette, as well as leading international artist Peter Doig. A recurring theme in the exhibition is the North Atlantic, its role in history, and its impact on artists’ imaginations.

Generations is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Sobey Art Award, which has had a groundbreaking impact on the visibility and vitality of contemporary artmaking across Canada. This nationally touring exhibition will celebrate that milestone, demonstrating the range and depth of the Sobey family’s engagement with Canadian art, and their prescient and visionary leadership in the cultural sector—a gift to Canada like no other.
